Lucknow: As the fourth edition of the Uttar Pradesh T20 League gears up, the Lucknow Falcons find themselves at something of a turning point. The tournament runs from August 14 to September 6, 2026, and for the first time will be split across two cities — 22 matches at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, and the remaining 12, including the playoffs and final, at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium. That dual-venue setup brings its own set of challenges, but the Falcons are heading into the season with genuine title hopes after years of being competitive without quite crossing the finish line.
One of the franchise’s biggest strengths has been continuity at the top. Bhuvneshwar Kumar — the seasoned India and IPL pacer — has been retained as captain for a fourth season running. His new-ball swing, control at the death, and overall leadership have been a constant thread through the team’s previous campaigns. Batting alongside him is former India Under-19 captain Priyam Garg, retained as a key part of the middle order, where his temperament and ability to either anchor an innings or accelerate when needed has repeatedly come through in tight moments.
The franchise has also done a good job holding onto its core group. Retained names include Vipraj Nigam, whose all-round game and knack for picking up wickets has made him a consistent match-winner, along with Kritagya Kumar Singh, wicketkeeper-batter Aaradhya Yadav, Mohammad Saif, Abhinandan Singh, Navneet Kumar, Akshu Bajwa, Satyam Pandey, and Ali Zafir Mohsin — a group that knows Ekana’s conditions well and understands what the league demands. At the auction, the Falcons added some fresh depth in Sameer Chaudhary (₹11.75 lakh), a promising young batter from Meerut, along with Kartikeya Singh, Sudhanshu Sonkar, Yashu Pradhan, Rohit Dwivedi, and Krishn Kumar Saroj. The resulting squad of 17-18 players strikes a decent balance between experience and youth, with plenty of flexibility across both batting and bowling.
Historically, though, the Falcons have been the team that’s always around at the business end without ever quite winning it. Last season, they finished third in the league stage with five wins from ten games, made it through the Eliminator by beating the Gorakhpur Lions, but came up short in Qualifier 2 against the Meerut Mavericks. Earlier seasons followed a similar pattern — regular playoff appearances, plenty of resilience, but no trophy. That track record is really the basis for the optimism heading into this year.
Home advantage at Ekana should count for something early on — the team knows the pitch, the outfield, and has the crowd behind it. Their tournament opener on August 15 against the Noida Kings is a good chance to settle in before things get tougher against sides like the Meerut Mavericks and the Kashi Rudras, the defending, two-time champions. The move to Kanpur later in the tournament will require some adjustment, though a well-rounded squad should be able to handle it.
What sets the Falcons apart from a typical underdog outfit is the mix of star power and homegrown talent. Bhuvneshwar’s presence alone lifts the side, while Vipraj Nigam’s ability to contribute in both departments adds real balance. Sameer Chaudhary brings some extra aggression to the middle order, and the younger players stand to benefit simply from sharing a dressing room with more experienced pros — something that’s already helped a fair few UP players make the jump to the IPL over the years.
There’s no shortage of competition, though. Kashi Rudras, led by Karan Sharma and strengthened further in the auction, will be tough to dislodge as defending champions. The Meerut Mavericks still carry plenty of firepower, and teams like the Kanpur Superstars have also bolstered their squads. Over a 24-day, 34-match tournament, staying consistent, managing player workloads, and holding nerve in knockout games will likely decide who lifts the trophy — and turning regular-season form into knockout-stage ruthlessness is exactly where the Falcons have fallen short before.
